Manufacturing Innovation Technological Innovations in Translucent Paper Manufacturing
Translucent paper manufacturing is one of the most mechanically demanding processes in the paper converting industry. Achieving optimal translucency without sacrificing tensile strength or ink absorption requires state-of-the-art chemical and mechanical controls.
1. Mechanical Hydration & Fiber Beating
Traditional paper derives opacity from air pockets trapped between cellulose fibers. To produce transparent vellum, our mills subject pure softwood and hardwood chemical pulp to prolonged mechanical refining (beating). This breaks down fiber walls, causing them to absorb water and gelatinize. When pressed and dried, the fibers collapse completely, eliminating internal light refraction air gaps and creating a uniform translucent sheet.
2. Calendering & Surface Sizing Innovations
Modern print chemistry demands that paper surfaces receive precise sizing agents. Simply Gilded's advanced manufacturing line incorporates super-calender stacks using alternating chilled iron and soft cotton composite rollers. Under immense line pressure (up to 300 kg/cm), the paper surface is ultra-burnished, creating an exceptionally smooth micrometer-level smoothness (Sheffield smoothness < 50 SU) that prevents printer feed friction and ink bleeding.
